7th Grade - Guest Presentation
ThinkFirst (Central DuPage Hospital)
ThinkFirst for Youth has been pilot-tested throughout the U.S. with favorable results from students and teachers. The safety curriculum uses worksheets and activities to educate pre-teens and young teens on reducing their risk for injury, with an emphasis on understanding the anatomy of the brain and spinal cord, and their ability to protect themselves. As who have sustained a brain or spinal cord injury and they effectively share their story. VIP speakers partner with a healthcare profesisonal to help our high-risk populations understand the realities and consequences of making unsafe choices, and the benefits to "Thinking First" to make safe choices. We offer this program to schools in a deliberate effort to help developing students make good safety choices as they ride with older siblings, and parents, visual aides including a PowerPoint, and reinforcement giveaways to help emphasize good decision-making as it relates to their safety. This past year as we launched this new program, we were able to present ThinkFirst For Youth to nine schools.
INFORMATION PRESENTED TO CLASS:
The Class Presentation focus is primarily on head and neck/spinal cord injury and prevention/protection with the use of bike helmets, seat belts, following traffic/safety protocal, etc. The "choices" part focuses on making good choices and kids not putting themselves or others in danger.
Since this is a one-day visit, a registered nurse gives a powerpoint addressing above topics for 15/20 minutes and the remaining time, a guest speaker who has a head/neck/spinal cord injury tells their story. There is also a question answer period.
